A new form of erectile dysfunction (ED) has been identified in men, including some who have sex and have been prescribed Viagra or similar drugs.

And they also found that those who used the drug for ED had a 55 percent increased risk of a mental condition, such as panic attacks or social anxiety.
“This is important to consider because if we’re talking about drugs like Viagra, there are probably other forms of ED,” the study’s lead author, Dr. Joseph L. Leavitt, MD, a professor of medicine and director of the Center for Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Northwestern University, said in an interview with a.
The findings are not new. More research on the use of drugs for ED in the U. S. is still in its early stages.
There’s also a new type of treatment for ED that is a form of treatment known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, which work by relaxing blood vessels. But they don’t work in a different way than Viagra. And they don’t address the underlying causes of ED. That’s one of the most common causes of ED.
So the new study may not help a man suffering from ED. But it may help men who have trouble getting or keeping an erection, or other conditions, that could cause ED.
“It’s not clear that there are any medications that work in a similar way, and that’s very important for men with ED,” said L. Craig S. Schafer, MD, director of the Center for Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Northwestern University.
Safer’s colleague Dr. David F. Reisman, MD, chairman of the Division of Dermatology at the Mayo Clinic and a co-author on the study, said, “The findings are exciting because there’s a lot of research showing the benefits of Viagra in improving erectile function.”
In clinical practice, many men who have ED take the drug for several days or weeks to treat symptoms and keep them from coming back, according to Schafer, who is not involved in the study.
The new study shows that it may help men who suffer from ED to treat other issues, such as depression and anxiety.
